Now that I’ve had the opportunity to tell our group’s Rome story a bit in writing, now I’ll tell it visually. Enjoy the photos. I’ll keep posting them as I get the time to sort and write captions.
- Entering the monastery grounds in Subiaco
- Jen and Sr. Mary Michela, her grad school room mate whom we randomly met in a side street
- S. Maria della Vittoria Church, across the street from S. Susanna (the American church in Rome)
- Monastery of Subiaco
- Colosseum–enough said
- Standing before a piece of the pillar where Jesus was scourged–now inside Santa Prassede Church in Rome
- Pope Benedict delivering his catechesis to us in Paul VI Hall
- Julia racing down the hill outside of Subiaco
- Bomb that almost as if by a miracle did not explode and destroy St. Benedict’s cave in Subiaco
- Statue of the goddess Artemis in the Vatican Museum
- Joseph inside the cave where St. Benedict meditated
- The Ecstasy of St. Teresa of Avila, by Bernini, in S. Maria della Vittoria
- Cool statues of Moses with his “horns” outside of S. Maria della Vittoria Church.
- Ramages in front of the Pantheon and an obelisk brought to Rome from Egypt..
- Subiaco painting reminding us to “remember death daily”: remember who you are now (figures on left) and what will come of your mortal body later (the three stages on right), and then you will realize the need to change the way you live.
- Only live painting of St. Francis done, done while he visited Subiaco
- Subiaco painting depicting death (who rides swiftly as if on a horse) cutting off the lives of the rich and young first (on left) because they do no pay enough attention to him.
- Cool side chapel in Subiaco with Peter and Paul. Looks somewhat Eastern.
- A sight for sore eyes
- Our bus couldn’t make the turn and stalled at the top of a cliff near Monte Cassino–very “fun”
- Our very good guide discussing the tapestries in the Vatican museum
- Rome has a great thing going on–wine on tap. We bought 2 bottles worth of wine on tap form this guy in a nearby “bar” for 3 euros total. You take it home in plastic bottles.
- We had no seats in this mass in St. Peter’s, but where we ended up allowed Joseph some space to roam around and be content
- Waiting for the bus to take us to the metro
- Park across from our residence where the kids got a break to do something they wanted to do for a change
- Matt w/ St. Matthew the Evangelist (above, left) in St. Peter’s
- Julia had to stop for an important phone call
- Julia enjoying herself on the metro
- Matt in front from of Caravaggio’s Matthew chapel in S. Luigi dei Francesi
- Rainy day in the Colosseum
- In front of the Captoline Museum where we saw an awesome exhibition of the Vatican Secret Archives
